I’m thrilled to share some powerful insights from my latest Capitalist Culture® podcast episode with Rich Smith, a CMO and behavioral scientist with more than 30 years of experience in marketing, leadership, and understanding why people make the decisions they do.
This conversation explores behavioral science, persuasion, crisis leadership, brand building, and how AI is changing marketing and the customer experience.
Here are the highlights you will not want to miss:
Why People Really Buy
• People often make decisions emotionally and rationalize them afterward. Great marketing connects emotionally first, then provides the rational justification.
• Rich breaks down behavioral principles including confirmation bias, loss aversion, social proof, scarcity, and framing, and how each influences customers and leaders.
• Social proof becomes especially powerful at the moment someone is deciding whether to buy because people want reassurance that others like them have made the same decision successfully.
Building Brands That Break Through
• Rich helped launch the first platinum bank card in the U.S., generating more than 7 million accounts and $12.5 billion in loans in under two years.
• The lesson? Customers weren't simply buying another credit card. They were buying status.
• Creating a new category can be far more powerful than trying to outperform everyone in an existing one.
Leading Through Crisis
• During the 2008 financial crisis, Rich helped navigate AIG through extraordinary uncertainty and later helped rebuild its brand.
• His leadership lesson is simple: people hate uncertainty. Communicate frequently, transparently, and honestly, even when you don't have every answer.
• Trust is built through authenticity, credibility, and consistently delivering on commitments.
AI Is Changing the Customer
• Rich distinguishes between "big M" marketing, strategy, and "little m" marketing, the tactics and execution.
• AI can dramatically improve execution, but strategy, judgment, and creativity still require human leadership.
• The bigger opportunity may not be using AI to make marketing departments more efficient. It is understanding how AI is fundamentally changing the way customers discover, evaluate, and buy products.
Build a Customer Factory
• Instead of spreading resources across every available marketing channel, Rich recommends deeply testing a smaller number of channels with enough scale to know what actually works.
• Marketing leaders also need to translate marketing metrics into business outcomes that CEOs and CFOs understand.
Final Thoughts
The best marketing isn't about manipulating people. It's about understanding how people actually make decisions.
As AI transforms how customers find information and make choices, the companies that combine behavioral insight, human creativity, proprietary data, and disciplined strategy will be positioned to adapt.
And for leaders, one lesson remains timeless: understand your customer, communicate clearly, and build trust.
